 The Nintendo Entertainment System was the first home console released by Nintendo to be released in a country other than Japan and was  first released in Japan in 1983. It was released then released in North America in 1985, Europe in 1986 and Australia in 1987. It sold a stagerring 61.1 million units by the time it was finally discontinued in Japan in September of 2003. as of 1999, the original Super Mario Bros had sold 40,230,000 units worldwide making it the best selling game on the Nintendo Entertainment System with Super Mario Bros 3 coming in at second with 18,000,000 units sold and Super Mario Bros 2 coming in at 3rd with 10,000,000 units sold.

Nintendo began developing the NES in 1981 after the success of Arcade games. the original plans set out a 16-bit system that would act as a fully fledged computer with a floppy disk and keyboard. These plans were changed by CEO at the time, Hiroshi Yamauchi,
